Horse & Plow

Vineyards

Horse & Plow wines are made exclusively with organically grown grapes. Organic farming prohibits the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. We feel that in addition to the enviornmental benefits of organic farming, the resulting wines show more varietal character and sense of place. Our growers are talented and committed farmers who are also serious stewards of the land they farm.

McFadden Farm, Potter Valley

McFadden Farm, Potter Valley

Varietals: Chardonnay, Riesling

McFadden Farm is located at the northern end of Potter Valley in Mendocino County. Potter Valley lies on the edge of the Mendocino National Forest and by the headwaters of the Russian River. For 37 years, Guinness McFadden has been farming all his vineyards organically. He grows a mix of certified organic grapevines, herbs, rice and cattle. Organic farms sustain diverse ecosystems with higher populations of plants, insects and animals that encourage healthy, well balanced vineyards. To supplement his eco–friendly vision of sustainable agriculture, Guinness built a hydro–electric power plant in 1983, capable of powering 100 homes and in 2005 he installed solar panels to make the farm completely energy sufficient.
Wines: Harvester White and Chardonnay–McFadden Farm.

Dean at Marimar Torres Vineyard, Sebastopol

Marimar Estate, Don Miguel Vineyard,
Russian River Valley

Varietal: Chardonnay

We are thrilled to work with the legendary Torres family’s Don Miguel Vineyard Chardonnay. “After experimenting for several years with a few blocks of vines, in 2003, we decided to make the jump to the entire vineyard,” says winery founder, Marimar Torres. “The whole idea is to create an ideal balance between the vines and nature. The vineyard will be ecologically healthier, and the grapes of higher quality. That’s our long-term reward.”

The vineyard was planted in 1912, by Gaetano and Maria Testa using Belgian draft horses and today is farmed by their great grandchildren, Maria and Rusty. The Testa family takes great pride in maintaining the vineyards, where they employ labor intensive, old world, organic farming techniques.

Dean & Dad at Grist Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley

Grist Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley

Varietals: Zinfandel, Syrah, Viognier

Grist Vineyard is located at 1,000 feet above the Dry Creek Valley floor. Planted by the Hambrecht Family on the top of Bradford Mountain in 1974, it has been organically farmed since 2003. The vines are head pruned and sit in iron–rich red volcanic soils that stress the vines into low yields and concentrated wines. Another benefit to being on top of Bradford Mountain is the vineyard is above the fog line. The decrease in humidity, increase in hours of sunshine, and the cool afternoon breeze helps make this site truly a unique vineyard in Dry Creek Valley. The fruit from Grist has been sold over the years to many cult producers such as Turley, Seghesio, Verge, and Bradford Mountain.
Wines: Zinfandel, Syrah, Viognier, and Rose.

Robert Sinskey Vineyard, Carneros

Robert Sinskey Vineyard, Carneros

Varietal: Pinot Gris–Block 882

Robert Sinskey Vineyard was one of the first ultra premium growers in Napa Valley to really focus on Organic and Biodynamic farming over 20 years ago. Currently they farm over 200 acres of vineyards in the Carneros and Stags Leap districts of Napa and Sonoma Valleys. We get our Pinot Gris from a small, single acre block of the Three Amigos Vineyard in southern Carneros–Napa called 882. This location is one of the coolest sites in Carneros because of the proximity to the San Pablo Bay.
